The tide of war had turned against the Germans in 1942. As they fell back
from the disaster at Stalingrad, a German counteroffensive left a bulge in
the Russian defensive line around the city of Kursk. In the spring and early
summer of 1943, the Germans prepared an offensive against that bulge, using
their latest tank, the Panther, and their remaining tank forces in the East.
But the Russians, with their large number of T-34's, were ready. The result
would be the largest tank battle of the war at Prokhorovka, but one that the
Germans would not win. And with their defeat, the Russian advance could not
be stopped short of Berlin.
