The first half of 1862 was an unmitigated disaster for the Confederacy in
the West. Defeat after crushing defeat cast a pall over the south. In the late
summer of that year, however, Southern hopes were restored as Confederate armies
pushed into central Kentucky. This bold move reserved the momentum in the West
and promised to erase the hard won Union gains of the previous year.
Threatening the success of the Southern offensive was the Union stranglehold on
the vast territory west of the Tennessee River. The railroad center of Corinth
was the linchpin of the Union defences. Will the Confederates recapture Corinth
and advance into Tennessee and Kentucky, or will the Union armies prevail,
opening the road to Vicksburg?
